Overview

The Aquatics Director is responsible for the leadership, administration, and growth of all aquatics programming and pool operations at the YMCA of Pueblo. This includes swim lessons, lifeguard services, swim programming, open swim, lap swim, and special aquatic events.

 

The Aquatics Director ensures safe, effective, and innovative aquatic programming while providing exceptional member experiences and maintaining compliance with all YMCA, state, and local safety standards. The position supervises aquatic staff and manages the daily operation of YMCA pool facilities.

Responsibilities

Aquatics Program Management

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate all aquatics programming including:
    • Swim lessons
    • Water fitness classes
    • Lifeguard training
    • Swim team programming
    • Open and lap swim
    • Special aquatic events
  • Monitor participation and program effectiveness.
  • Develop new and innovative aquatic offerings that increase community impact and membership value.

Pool Operations & Safety

  • Oversee daily pool operations and scheduling.
  • Ensure compliance with all YMCA, state, and local aquatic safety regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Conduct safety drills and maintain emergency action plans.
  • Maintain first aid supplies, rescue equipment, AEDs, and emergency equipment.

Staff Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate lifeguards, swim instructors, and aquatic staff.
  • Maintain staff certification records and training documentation.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  • Ensure proper staffing ratios and operational coverage.

Budget & Administration

  • Assist with department budget development and management.
  • Monitor payroll, enrollment, and financial performance.
  • Prepare reports and program statistics as required.

Community Engagement

  • Build relationships with members, schools, and community organizations.
  • Promote aquatic safety education throughout the community.
  • Support YMCA fundraising efforts including the Annual Campaign and aquatic sponsorship opportunities.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide direct program delivery as needed including teaching swim lessons and lifeguarding shifts.
  • Serve as a role model for YMCA mission and values.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Community Program Director or Vice President of Operations.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position regularly works in office settings, indoor pools, outdoor areas, and recreational environments.

 

Must be able to:

  • Remove an adult from the water during an emergency.
  • Swim and perform all required aquatic rescue skills as required by American Redcross Lifeguarding.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and climb as required.
  • Work evenings, weekends, and special events as necessary to support operations and programming.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Aquatics Management, Physical Education, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of aquatics or YMCA professional experience.
  • Minimum of one year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Current certifications or ability to obtain:
    • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
    • First Aid
    • Lifeguard Certification
    • Oxygen Administration preferred
    • Swim Instructor Certification preferred
    • Lifeguard Instructor Certification preferred
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and respond effectively to emergencies.

Posted Salary Range

USD $57,784.00 - USD $59,000.00 /Yr.
