Overview

The YMCA of Pueblo is looking for Summer Staff for our resident camp at YMCA Camp Jackson in Rye, Colorado. Camp Jackson Staff live an active outdoor lifestyle. Working at Summer Camp requires energy, enthusiasm, compassion, and a passion for making the world a better place. Our team of dedicated professionals work closely together in the beautiful San Isabel National Forest to create meaningful outdoor experiences for youth and families.

 

Camp Jackson is looking for a Horsemasters Cabin Leader who will enthusiastically represent the YMCA by displaying a positive attitude, maintaining a high level of energy and commitment to quality throughout all aspects of the job. Horse Counselors must embody the four-character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The Horse Counselors will serve as part of a two-person team in a cabin, taking responsibility for the health, safety, and welfare of youth campers. They will also assist in managing, feeding, caring for, and preparing a head of 12 horses. All camp staff may assist in the maintenance and housekeeping of camp facilities. This is a seasonal position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an exciting and safe Horsemanship program incorporating the YMCA’s values
  • Develop and facilitate lessons that teach leadership, counseling skills and camp program skills
  • Immediately report any safety, health or equipment maintenance problems to the Camp Director upon discovery
  • Maintain inventory of necessary equipment/supplies and inform the Camp Director of needed supplies in a timely fashion
  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and staff meetings
  • Act as a positive role model for campers and other staff, demonstrating the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in the performance of job duties
  • Will work as a cabin counselor
  • ●Play an active role in all camp activities
  • Will work stay over weekends as assigned
  • Evaluate current season and make suggestions for future season
  • To perform all other duties as needed or assigned
  • These are not the only duties to be performed. Some duties may be reassigned, and other duties may be assigned as required

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age 
  • Red Cross or equivalent CPR/First Aid Certification required
  • Previous overnight camp experience preferred
  • High School Diploma required
  • Minimum of three months of full time or equivalent part time satisfactory and verifiable experience with middle school age children and teens. Six months is preferred
  • Must have a sincere and genuine interest in working with youth and should relate well to all age levels and backgrounds of people.
  • Physically fit and able to hike, walk, stand, bend and lift up to 50 lbs comfortably over the course of a day
  • 1 Year previous equine experience required
  • Mentally and visually alert to recognize potential hazards and accidents
  • Physically and mentally able to respond to emergencies and administer emergency care effectively
  • 2 years previous camp experience preferred
